Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

smaller-diamond-imageWhen it comes to diamond choice, whether for engagement ring or as gift for any occasion, one is often engulfed by an ocean of controversial information which seems to grow in complicity as one learn more. First comes the 4Cs system and its implications on the price and as soon as one figures out what is all about, there comes the certificate origin, proportions, fluorescence and many more, each one claiming different degree of importance. At the average cost of two to three monthly salaries it is not difficult to see why the potential diamond buyer is determined to make the right decision. My honest opinion however, is that the marketing efforts of the diamond merchants are often misleading pushing the buyer to an unfavourable choice. Why would the merchant do this?

d_cert_imgThe issue of diamond certificates is one discussed in dept in many articles, but the significance of this document is in many instances grossly overrated, pushing customers to overspend or make unfavorable choice. In this article I will state my opinion, based on more than 18 years of experience with diamonds including working with, quoting and examining this gem, as part of my full time job. I would like to stipulate that this opinion is based on my own experience and clarity on the matter, rather than scientific research or stringent statistics and should be perceived as suggested guidelines and not as sole source of information.

(The 4C’s revisited)
The perfect diamond is the best quality and size one can get, for the price one can afford,  and is obviously not the same for everyone. Finding the perfect diamond depends on one’s ability to balance the different segments forming a diamond’s quality, known as the 4C’s  and approach them by the order of importance. In this way it is possible to acquire stunning looking diamond for far less than one could expect to pay for.
Information about diamond classification (the 4 C’s) is available widely on the web, but it has a common shortcoming. The information is rather technical than practical and preaches the same old things, driven by heavy marketing influence. There is in fact, lack of information based on value for money factor or appearance merit. In this article I will scrutinize the 4C’s form a different angle based on the values above and try to give you a different perspective on what really matters when choosing a diamond.  The 4 C’s mentioned above stand for: Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut
