jewel_dimensionThe practicality of the engagement ring’s design is often overlooked since the attention of the purchaser is occupied by the desire to impress as well as the effort to break the riddle of diamond quality versus cost into manageable bits. The ideal engagement ring setting should provide aesthetic satisfaction, comfortable wear and easy maintenance. The order of importance of these three elements is vastly dependent by one’s personality and life style. Women with active lifestyle for example prefer minimalistic engagement ring designs with less detail and low set stone. They are favouring study settings with rounded edges. The tension set diamond engagement ring is a good example for such type of setting.

gemsThe choice of the stone set in an engagement ring is a longevity factor with major importance. We don’t just want to have the stone in place in 20 years - we certainly want it to retain its beauty too. At the top of the hardness scale the diamond is the undisputed king of the engagement ring gems. It has two shortcomings though. It is extremely expensive and it is rather common. As much as the diamond industry is trying to convince the modern jewellery buyer how rare this gem is, it feels like every woman has one. Diamonds of sizes less than half a carat does not appeal to people who love impact jewellery, and when affordability becomes an issue one has to look for gemstone alternatives. Two or three carats of sapphire engagement ring has far greater visual impact than 0.50ct diamond one and the cost is about the same.

choice-cartoonIn my long carrier as an engagement ring designer and master goldsmith I have personally made hundreds of engagement rings and I would estimate that at least 20% of the customers, came up with concepts of their own, totally striped of practicality. Way must one be practical when it comes to engagement ring? Engagement ring is a type of jewellery, one is expecting to last lifelong while hardly taking it off and even to pass to the next generation. The longevity of any fine jewellery piece depends on the way it is worn and on the quality of the materials it is made from.

bluechalcedony1One of the earliest raw materials exploited by man, chalcedony (kal sed’n-e) was used by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years to create containers, arrows, spears, knives and other tools. As civilisation developed, it became prized as a gemstone, and was used as a precious material for the creation of ornaments and small sculptures. A translucent form of quartz, there are many varieties of this stone. Based on the colour imbued by various impurities, they are known by their own names, and include jasper, onyx and agate. In general, the name chalcedony is reserved for the white, grey, blue and brown varieties. Chalcedony has been known in the Mediterranean

Palladium and platinum are undeniably superior to any other white precious metal used in fine jewelry manufacturing. Plenty have been written about platinum and its properties as compared to the white gold alloys. I myself wrote short article a while ago. The newcomer palladium is described as very similar to platinum. This is truth but there are differences and the major one is its price. Let`s leave now the price part for the end and put the two metals together
